Description
This is a photograph that I took of a "petroglyph panel" that shows one of the ways archaeologists can date some of the symbols etched into the desert sandstone. If one looks at the far left and in the middle of the image you will see a horse with a rider on its back, hunting bison. We know that there were no horses in the New World until the Spanish imported them.....so we can say for certain that this petroglyph was produced in historical times......not prehistoric.

Great detail, I've seen quite a few similar images of people riding horses in rock art in Bolivia and Chile too, as you say, dates the panels to after the Spanish conquest

As a former Archeologist I once did a survey of Palo Duro Canyon. We were in search of petroglyphs, we found two that we believe were pre- contact. Thing about is that we couldn't divulge there location.....there are scoundrels out there that will deface them....sad. Thanks Karen!

What a beautiful image, Stuart, I am so envious that you got to see this. I am crazy about glyphs of all kinds and would love to see more. My dreams are made of things such as this. f/l
